Dr. Jason Kalman Presented with the Dr. Alfred Gottschalk - John and Marianne Slade Chair for an Emerging Scholar in Jewish Intellectual History at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati
Dr. Jason Kalman, Assistant Professor of Classical Hebrew Texts and Interpretation at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati, was presented with the Dr. Alfred Gottschalk - John and Marianne Slade Chair for an Emerging Scholar in Jewish Intellectual History at a public lecture and reception at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati on Sunday, October 18, 2010.
The Gottschalk-Slade Chair was established by John and Marian Slade in honor of their friend, Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, former HUC-JIR President (1971-1996), Chancellor (1996-2000), and Chancellor Emeritus (2000-2009). Dr. Jason Kalman presented the lecture "Excavating the Dark Places of the University: The Johns Hopkins University Admisions Quota and the Jewish Community." The presentation of this Chair reflected the preeminent role that HUC-JIR's faculty and campus play in the intellectual and cultural life of the greater Cincinati area.
"Dr. Kalman exemplifies the commitment to scholarship, teaching, and mentorship that marked Dr. Alfred Gottschalk's dedicated years of leadership of the College-Institute," said Rabbi David Ellenson, HUC-JIR President.
Dr. Kalman received his Ph.D. from the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University, with a dissertation focusing on interpretations of the Book of Job in Jewish thought from antiquity to the modern period. A research fellow affiliated with the University of the Free State, South Africa, he specializes in the history of Jewish biblical exegesis, and his specific research interests include rabbinic anti-Christian polemic, medieval intellectual history as reflected in biblical commentary, and biblical interpretation after the Holocaust. The author of numerous scholarly articles, Dr. Kalman is the co-author with Jaqueline Du Toit of Canada's Big Biblical Bargain: How McGill University Bought the Dead Sea Scrolls (McGill-Queen's University Press, May 2010), and is working on a biography of noted HUC-JIR scholar Dr. Harry Orlinsky.
