The following individuals were inducted onto the Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion at its meeting in Cincinnati on October 18, 2010:
Karen M. Hoguet is Chief Financial Officer of Macy's, Inc. (formerly known as Federated Department Stores, Inc.) Hoguet joined the company as a senior consultant in marketing and long-range planning after leaving the Boston Consultant Group in 1982. In 1985, she was named director of capital and business planning and, in 1987, promoted to operating vice president for planning and financial analysis. A year later, she was elected a corporate vice president and became senior vice president of planning in 1991. Hoguet added the title of corporate treasurer a year later. In 1997, she was elected senior vice president and chief financial officer, and promoted to executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2005.

Rabbi Lewis H. Kamrass is the Senior Rabbi of Isaac M. Wise Temple of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he has spent his entire rabbinate of twenty-six years. Appointed to the position of Wise Temple's Senior Rabbi at the unusually young age of 29, his tenure has been marked by significant congregational involvement by hundreds of the synagogue's members in a variety of Social Action projects including service in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, educational projects, and other civic activities.

Richard Scheiner retired as a shareholder of The Buckingham Research Group in April, 2007 following a career in institutional equity sales and building the infrastructure of the firm. He developed the e-mail communication formats used by most brokerage firms in communicating research ideas to clients. His account base included such firms as Fidelity Management and Research, Wellington Management, Vinik Asset management, Credit Suisse Asset Management, ING Asset Management and others. Prior to Buckingham, Scheiner was one of the partners buying Lynch, Jones and Ryan from Citicorp. He currently manages his own portfolios which include stocks, bonds, directly owned real estate, commodities and real estate, venture and distressed securities partnerships.

Rabbi Scott L. Shpeen has served Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany since 1985, and assumed the position of Senior Rabbi of the Congregation in July 1992. A native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, he is the product of the Reform Movement, having spent many summers at the URJ Camps as well as participating in the EIE (Eisendrath International Exchange) Program spending a semester at the Leo Baeck High School in Haifa, Israel. Concurrent with his High School studies, Rabbi Shpeen was awarded a Certificate in Jewish Education from Gratz College, Philadelphia.

Carole Sterling has been a tireless and dedicated UJA Federation for the over nearly two decades and was designated the 2003 recipient of the Phil Granovsky Award for Community Excellence, which honors individuals who exemplify the best in UJA Federation campaigning. As a UJA Federation Board member, she has served as Chair of UJA Federation's Women's Campaign and Advocacy; Chair of the Walk with Israel; participated in the 1998 March of the Living; and served for two years as Vice Chair of UJA's annual campaign. Among her many communal leadership roles are the Vaughan Steering Committee of UJA Federation's Jewish Toronto Tomorrow initiative, the Executive and Board of Temple of Temple Sinai, second Vice President of the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism, and Regional Representative of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Dr. David B. Ruderman, Joseph Meyerhoff Professor of Modern Jewish History and Ella Darivoff Director of the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies; University of Pennsylvania, presented "The People and the Book: The Invention of Print and the Transformation of Jewish Culture" on October 12, 2010 at HUC-JIR/New York. On the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the founding of the Cincinnati campus of HUC-JIR, many Greater Cincinnati companies and organizations have stepped forward to support the College's fundraising effort to provide scholarships for the campus' rabbinical and graduate students. The Worship Working Group (WWG), a student-faculty collaboration whose mission is to enhance the leading of prayer and the worship experience at the New York campus, is planning an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Based on the central themes of gratitude and appreciation, the WWG is asking members of the HUC-JIR community to share words of thanks from their tradition in the form of prayer, poem, song, or reading. The service promises to be a meaningful event in the life of the HUC-JIR community.
MARAM, the Israeli Council of Progressive Rabbis, recently elected new leadership to help move their organization forward, and, at the same time, strengthen their friendship with the CCAR. Rabbi Maya Leibovic, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '93, Rabbi of Congregation KAMATZ in Mevaseret Tzion, will take on the role of President for the next two years. Alongside Rabbi Leibovic will be members of the Board, including Rabbi Edgar Nof, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '91; Rabbi Yehoyada Amir, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '04; Rabbi Corrie Zeidler, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '06; Rabbi Ilana Baird, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '06; and Rabbi Miri Gold, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '98. Rabbi Nof will be also act as MARAM treasurer. Rabbi Galia Sadan, HUC-JIR/Jerusalem '03 will continue as MARAM coordinator.
Dr. Sarah Bunin Benor, Associate Professor of Contemporary Jewish Studies at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles, writes, "Why do American Jews divide themselves not just by ethnicity and denomination, but also as 'mainstream' and 'innovative?' In the past year and a half I conducted research to find out. My findings may be of interest to anyone with a stake in the Jewish community."
Reform rabbis in the US have expressed their deep disappointment and regret that the Israeli cabinet approved the proposed changes to Israel's Citizenship Law, including a requirement that non-Jewish immigrants to Israel pledge allegiance to the Jewish democratic nature of the state. The Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) warned in a statement released at the end of last week that, "It would turn Israel into the very kind of country which historically Jews themselves have rightly cursed for their unequal treatment of non-Christians and non-Muslims. More than symbolic loyalty statements, Israel needs its non-Jewish citizens as partners in peace, equally invested in the future of the state."

| Dr. Michael Chernick, Deutsch Professor of Jewish Jurisprudence and Social Justice at HUC-JIR/New York, will be participating in the Global Day of Learning on November 7, 2010 in the San Francisco area. The event will take place at Pacifica Jewish Community Center, Foster City, CA. He will also be presiding at the meeting of the Consultation on the Sabbath in Text, Theology, and Tradition. The Consultation meets at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. Memory and Transformation, a new art exhibition opening at the Los Angeles campus of HUC-JIR, in collaboration with the Jewish Artists Initiative, is a juried show of 33 artists who were asked to approach the themes of memory and transformation from their own perspective. Their works reflect the dynamic process of cultural change and their individual connections with religious or political ideas to link phenomena previously thought unconnected. The Artists Reception will take place on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, from 6:30-8:00 pm with remarks by Donna Stein, Guest Curator, at 7:00 pm. The exhibition is on view through December 31, 2010.
Anat Hoffman, Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center, spoke at HUC-JIR/New York on Thursday, October 21, 2010 on "Arguing: A National Sport, a Genetic Disease, or the Jewish Art of Tikkun Olam."
International glass specialist Steve Resnick hand-carved this grey glass mezuzah (6.5" x 1.5") featuring a stylized image of Jerusalem. The mezuzah, which means doorpost in Hebrew, is the case that contains the parchment on which the prayers are written.
