I
f you have the ambition to share music with
others as a spiritual leader, you can apply your
talents in ways that will lift spirits and forge
community while fostering your personal creativity.
As a cantorial student at the Debbie Friedman
School of Sacred Music, you will discover Judaism’s
unique musical heritage, the beauty of the ancient
cantorial tradition, and today’s innovative expres-
sions of spirituality.
At the same time, you will be encouraged to
envision how you can lead worship, inspire learning,
offer pastoral care, and compose and present
a myriad of styles of traditional and contemporary
music as part of the increasingly diverse role of
the contemporary cantor.
You will have the unique opportunity to begin your
journey in Jerusalem with a year-long immersion
in Hebrew language study as you get to know the
land, culture, and people of Israel. In no other place
on earth will you find the rich and complex varieties
of Jewish music, worship, ritual, and spirituality
that have evolved across centuries and continents.
During your next four years in New York, you will
delve into liturgy and liturgical music, Bible, midrash,
philosophy, musicology and history, and classes
in congregational leadership, musicianship, guitar,
piano, conducting, composition, and arranging.
Spiritual guidance will strengthen your own
relationship with God and worship so that you
can inspire others to do the same.
You will enjoy professional development in
education, pastoral counseling, and field work
supervision while serving as a student cantor in
a congregation. You will celebrate the culmination
of your learning with a recital reflecting your unique
research and interests, earn your Master’s in
Sacred Music, and be ordained.
Our internationally recognized faculty will nurture
your individual growth and introduce you to the
widest range of traditional and contemporary litur-
gical music, musical styles, and professional skills.
Your career as a cantor will infuse your life
with meaning while you find artistic and
spiritual fulfillment as a Jewish leader.
