This handout explains what “alignment to vision” and “coherence” mean in the context of innovation and why they are critical to the process of innovation. These concepts require that innovations be made in a systemic way so that various parts of the system (e.g. programmatic structure, curriculum, teaching, leadership, etc) are working together toward the vision. Alignment and coherence help sustain change and foster a “spiraling series of innovations” rather than piecemeal changes that often lose momentum.
