North American Jewish life has seen dramatic political, economic, social and cultural changes in the last 25 years. A far-reaching effort is needed to redesign Jewish education in order to keep it relevant and effective in the 21st century. Woocher, Ross and Woocher emphasize three key concepts underlying their ideas for new design principles: (1) empowering the learner; (2) the centrality of relationships in building commitment; and (3) Jewish learning as “life-centered.” They argue that action needs to be taken on an individual, institutional, and systemic level, in order to effectively overhaul the current Jewish education system. They also provide four high-leverage strategies that will help move Jewish education toward wide-scale and long-lasting adoption of new design principles.
