A generation or two ago, Jewish identity was created in the home and in organic Jewish communities. Today, the religious school is largely responsible for the creation of Jewish identity. However, alienation from organic Jewish life is resulting in ineffective educational experiences for many Jews. In this speech, Rabbi Jacobs examines strategies for changing Jewish education, including: (a) consistently practicing Judaism in the home; (b) sending children to Jewish schools; and (c) creating integrated and intensive Jewish experiences in synagogues, youth groups, etc. Jewish education can lead to a form Jewish identity, but only within the context of a strong Jewish community.
