This text study explores the text “One who does not make himself like the wilderness, hefker, it is impossible for him to attain wisdom or Torah. Therefore, it is written, ‘…in the wilderness of Sinai…’” (B’midbar Rabbah 1:7). The text study explores the notion of wilderness as a place of unfamiliarity and discomfort, in which it is possible to challenge preconceptions and explore possible change. The text study also includes an excerpt from Lawrence Kushner’s “Honey from the Rock.”
